Subaru had this tease on display at the 2011 LA Auto Show called the Subaru BRZ STI Concept. Although it is not in production, this is one of the first Subaru sports cars we have seen that is not all-wheel-drive nor turbocharged. While it still holds the famous Subaru four-cylinder boxer engine, this is one of the first live appearances of what the Subaru BRZ STI will look like.
Hot off the press, Subaru Canada sent us these videos of the new WRX STI racing through the Rally of the Tall Pines with four amazing camera angles. With the new Choose Your Own Angle Youtube video, you can select which view to watch in full screen, while the other three are still live in sync. The videos show us exactly what a Subaru WRX STI is made for! Watch Rally Driver Pat Richard rip through the course while hearing navigator Alan Ockwell give him directions in the dashboard camera view. With this speed and handling, Subaru should get some type of car of the year award!
These interesting videos and pictures come from Subaru who are launching a new television commercial for the 2011 WRX STi. This isn’t your typical advertisement, and you must watch both the videos to get a good understanding of how they did it, flip book style. Subaru used an old school zoetrope style animation with the entire tv spot frame by frame on the side of a test track. Next came the STi with a camera attached to the side, one foot away from the wall, accelerating as fast as possible down the track to create the illusion of animation. It’s great to see the car outrun a giant mechanical spider, however I think I’d still prefer to see the Subaru STi rally car on the dirt track spewing clouds of dust from the all-wheel-drive.
For those who are not satisfied with the performance numbers of their 4WD Subaru Impreza 2.0 Diesel, the Unichip tuners have released an upgrade that is surprisingly not for the Subaru STi model. Using the latest plug and play technology, the U-Connect piggy back ECU tuning software enables subtle electronic tweaks. Enhancing the Impreza’s fuel and boost output, the performance gains are quite significant. After being tested on the dyno, the new electronics added 17 bhp and 36 lb ft of torque over the stock Subaru Impreza model.
Most people tune cars for an increased visual appeal or performance numbers, but Travis Pastrana and the Red Bull team decided to jump a Subaru STirally car sending it flying nearly 250 feet! Not to mention that this crazy idea was done over water with floating barges. Earlier in the week the Red Bull guys and Travis Pastrana got together to practice the stunt in the desert where a few attempts didn’t go as planned. One of the Subaru WRX STi rally cars landed awkwardly on its side and completely crushed the suspension and frame from the devastating impact. Everything was all good however when it came down to New Year’s Eve last night with thousands of people cheering him on as they approached the new year. Check the video for the record destroying 250 foot jump that nearly doubled the previous world record.
